Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi- I am new to this forum. Just purchased a 99 C-2 and am really loving it! I know this has probably come up before, but does anyone have any advice on installing a hidden kill switch for added theft protection? Seems like a low cost solution, making it that much harder to steal my car. Thanks for any help! Gregg

The 996 already has some really advanced anti-theft programming. It's not like an old Hunter episode where somebody is going to hot wire your car and drive off! I believe the key has an electronic chip which is required to be within a certain distance to start the engine. In addition, it's a tough car to get into. I had a keysmith get into my 944 a few weeks ago, which he did with a jimmy in about 10 seconds. So I asked him what he would need for the 996. He looked it up in his keysmith-magic-carbreak book and after reading through several paragraphs the book concluded "it is probably cheaper to have the car towed to a dealership to have a new key fabricated." And since that will cost you over $200 (with towing), I imagine it's harder than just jimmying the door. But maybe somebody else with more technical knowledge can comment on this. By the way... don't forget that the most common stolen cars are Accords and Camrys. It's pretty hard to hide and sell a 996 without somebody noticing. You're much more likely to be a victim of vandalism or somebody stealing parts off your car like your headlights or spoiler.

Hidden kill switch for the ignition, or to kill the thief?! Sorry could not resist...just a little late night humor. Can't help you out here, but I'm sure someone else can. Welcome to the forum! - Michael

Beverly Hills Porsche was doing this. Not sure if they still do. You had to know where the switch was to start the car.
