Here in the UK, due to the way our registrations work, all though a car may have been first registered in Spetember 2002, it may still be an 02 model and not an 03. Are there any easy ways of telling the difference between them?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

The 10th digit of the vin will tell you the year.right before the letter S in the vin.
OK, so for an 02 it would be a 2 before the S, and 3 for an 03?
Yes for example my vin is WPOZZZ99Z2S420209 so my car is an 02.
