Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Help! Just bought a 1999 996 cab. The front locking motor for the convertible top is bad. I was told that if I plugged the motor back in (it had been removed from the top) that I could at least get the top up, won't lock, to see the condition of the top itself. So I pulled the flap back gently, pulled up on the top (about 8 inches, so I could plug the locking motor back in. Tried to raise the top, nothing. My question is, how can I get the top back down and the flap back in place. I believe the tension from the motors are causing them lock to want to go back down. Is there a way to bypass the motor and manually put the top down and flap back in place? All I want is to be able to drive the car on Monday and make my dealer appointment on Tuesday so they can fix the top. I did not get a users manual with the car, so I am stuck. And please be kind, I know I was an idiot to pull anything manually without disabling the motors I will appreciate any help someone could be!
