Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Model: 996, Year:1999, My 1999 Cabriolet deck lid top motor failed. I need help finding an inexpensive aftermarket replacement part. Any suggestions? Part # 996.561.933.01. The new "upgraded" part is quite expensive $700+ at the dealer. Am I taking a big risk buying a used part? Do these convertible top motors fail often? Thanks:

Any Porsche dismantelling place should have a good one in stock for your year. http://www.ladismantler.com/

I've never heard of the motor failing. I know of several cases of the drive mechanism 996.561.021.03 (that is powered by that motor) failing and/or binding. (It happened to me and to several others.) Are you sure that's not your problem? If you need just the motor, I wouldn't worry about buying used. (i.e. a used motor will be fine) Try also at DC Automotive. As always, be cautious when dealing with these online junkyards. Make sure you are specific on the part numbers and conditions, and be clear on the return policies.

small motors can usually be rebuilt by alternator and starter rebuiders.

POST 5Original post

I hope you know "for sure" the motor failed.....before you go and embark on finding a replacement..... Did you go thru all the posts from other members with convertible problems?.....you may have similar symptoms, and may have a much cheaper "fix".....

How do you know the top motor failed? What are the symptoms? can you open the top manually?
