I heard a statistic the other day that almost all side-impact fatalities are related to head-injuries. So when driving to work today I felt above my head and realized that there's a nice, big metal hinge that has a bad time written all over it. Anyone else wonder about this? I'm 6'5, so I may have a bit more issue than most (when the hinge sits directly next to the side of my head above the ear area). Anyway, I've got some foam-core that I'm going to try to wrap around the metal. Maybe that'll do something...?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Not an expert, but I think the hinge would be the least of your worries in a side crash from the left. As for the right side, doesn't that give your side air bag enough time to expand, or does it not go all the way up?
No, airbag most likely is only for your side. Bu if the stats are correct, then the hinge would in fact be the biggest issue, since it is difficult for a car to penetrate the side door, and the airbag will help in any case. But the head is unprotected. In fact I had a friend 10 or so years ago that got hit from the side. No damage to the body, but they had to pull skull fragments from his head (now he's got a plate). I just put the foam core on the hinge, seems like it'll help significantly. But ugly as all getup...
Thinking about it, this may be a new product for the BumperPlugs folks. Some sort of molded foam that sticks nicely to the cab side hinge metal, is of the correct color, and easy to take on and off. I know I'd pay healthily for a couple if they had one...
Zee, While the mechanism is less than friendly looking (even in the case of Boxsters), your fear is unfounded. I'll try to dig up a "ghost shot" or diagram, but the essence is that POSIP has a 30 liter airbag, that upon deployment actually goes higher than the top of the door's window. The "side" bag deploys upward, filling in the area above the door pull, while the area below the door pull is protected by other materials - including boron steel. I'm not your height, but my head is near to the mechanism in my Boxster - and I know that "I'm covered" by the side bag. Hope this helps, J
All great points but the bottom line is a coupe is (in most cases) safer than a convertible!
Sky, Sorry to say, but I agree w/you. Why sorry you may ask? Simple - I love soft tops! Ah well, J
Do you think that is a strong enough argument for me to convince my wife to sell the Cab and get a TT Coupe??????
I like Don's thinking! I agree that a coupe is safer than a cab (with the top up) if only because there are not metal pieces jutting out near one's head. But with the top down it could be argued that the opposite is true, since there's essentially nothing to hit your head on! I'd like to see something that speaks to the airbag going higher than the window's top - that would put me much more at ease. And since I've had the door panel off a couple of times I may have the airbag placement checked out by my mechanic to make sure that it's all in good working order. Until then, you'll recognize me by the round foam strip sitting next to my noggin...
Zee, When I get home tonight, I'll try to dig up either the ghost shot (cutaway) or diagram.... Don - so a TT Cab is out of the question??? (just kidding - love your car) J
The question isn't how high the side airbag goes, its how long it takes it to get there. Unfortunately, the answer to that is, too long to do you any good if you're t-boned by someone going over 25 mph, in which case the SUV's grill will serve as your side headrest, coupe or cab.
There is always a trade off. Nothing against cabs!
no question that those that choose a cab are taking a larger risk with thier safety (didnt stop me doing it). much as i like the idea of the pop up hoops behined the passenger seats guess really how effective would they be?? i often drive on the autoroute/motorway/freeway at 130km+ with my 4 year old in the back and roof down - dont like the odds on survival if the car rolls. then again if safety was no.1 criteria when buying cars we would all be driving suv's
