Hello, I am a new owner of a 1999 996 Carrera Cabriolet, as of about one week! I have the navigation option with my stereo which has the CD Changer option as well. I am interested in figuring out how to best implement an Apple iPOD (via Aux cable only) or consider the Phatbox. Any opinions on whether my headunit/configuration supports iPOD via Auxilary cable or whether the Phatbox will work with my setup/nav system? I have searched the forum and have found similiar threads, but am not sure whether i have a Becker or Siemens unit. Any advice appreciated. Love my new Porsche. Thank you - Rio

Just had the Phatbox installed in my 99, and IMHO it is the only way to go. Advantages of iPod are portability and support for AAC and Mac. Advatages of Phatbox are MUCH better sound (direct into your system, Burr-Brown DACs), no need to hack anything (sits in the trunk, plugs right in), support for MP3, WAV, flac, OGG, WindowsMedia, and has capability for 60 gigs - twice the largest iPod. But for now you do need a PC for it to work. Finally, it actually talks - it'll let you browse artists and albums with the Porsche head unit - very slick - with a voice emulator that essentially 'attached' to each album. This makes getting to the music incredibly easy, and has seriously impressed every passenger that has seen this thing. That said, it's about twice as much as the iPod. But for me the opportunity to have 300 albums in my trunk was too good to pass up...
Well I guess it's offcial...(taken from their website) Compatible with the following 1999-2002 Porsche car stereos: CDR-220 (w/ CD player) CR-220 (w/ cassette) Not compatible with PCM (Navigation system). I guess the PhatBox is not Compatible with PCM
Welll I guess that settles it. I have PCM/Nav and only have a Mac -- so no Phatbox for me at this time. That said, any hints on how to best get an AUX connection into my PCM? I would sacrifice my CD-Changer controls to have an AUX cable in my cabin somewhere. Thank you - Rio
