Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, today a clicking sound started when I turn the wheel from side to side. It's coming from the left hand side inline with the steering column. Any ideas?

POST 2Original post

It could be a lot of things actually. Sometimes the ball joints in the front control arm can ware out and develop noise. Same thing can be said for the Caster Arm bearings, swaybar drop link bearings and tie rod joints. I would start diagnosing by putting your car on the jacks and examine the rubber boots. Ruptured boots will allow road contaminates to get into the joints. Here's a diagram of the front suspension. Is your car a C2 or C4?

POST 3Original post

From inside the car or outside? Sorry to ask such a stupid question, but are we discussing a suspension issue, a clock spring issue in the steering column, or... ?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's definitely outside. I looked behind left front wheel. Clicking seems to be towards the center of the car. Nothing obvious, but there's a lot of moving parts back there. No torn rubber or leaks. Odd that this came out of nowhere? Any chance it could be nothing?

POST 5Original post

Does it click a single time while you turn the wheel lock-to-lock, or does it click repeatedly? When your car starts making a new sound, it's not "nothing," but there's no reason to immediately assume it's going to cost a fortune to put right.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's a click, click. No real pattern. Not so much at the lock to lock position. But along the way there. Definitely close to center position and just wiggling the wheel.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, I brought my car in to be looked at by a local Porsche specialist, IMA Motorsport in Chantilly VA. After about an hour of trouble shooting, we figured out it was a pebble stuck near the tie rod. Big props to IMA. They put it on the lift, on ramps, removed the wheel, took off the tie rod... They didn't even charge me. I did give the tech a $10 for lunch. They just earned a new client. And spared me from having to explain to my wife why my new Porsche needs hundreds of dollars in repairs two weeks after buying it.

POST 8Original post

That is awesome. Glad it was a simple fix. Props to IMS, sounds like they're good guys.

POST 10Original post

Sounds like the right shop for future business, glad it was minor in nature.

POST 11Original post

My steering has a little click and it was diagnosed as the springs that trip the blinker off when you turn just creaking. It can be adjusted if the steering wheel ever comes off but now that I know it's nothing I never hear it!
