Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm preparing to borescope my car as pre-pre-screen for the IMS solution and my own curiosity. I'm new to working on the platform and want to confirm my thoughts on the process. It looks like getting the catalytic converters out of the way is ideal to access the crank, agree? Maybe removing the air box instead? The car will be on jack stands not a lift. How helpful is it to remove a spark plug to release pressure when turning the crank? It’s good practice to mark the crank position and return it to that position, and only rotate clockwise, yes? This 3.9mm lens diameter scope should work well per Raby's recommendations on this video. Any reason to go with something else? The Scope The Scope TIA, Mims Jake's video on scoping

Save yourself some aggravation and scope thru the spark plugs for the easiest/best results. Believe me when I tell you its not the same laying on your back, car on jackstands,,, as in Jake's video with an empty block half case, with no pistons, no crank/crank/carrier, no oil dripping in your face, and conveniently sitting on a work bench at eye level. And snaking the camera easily thu an empty block on the bench at eye level with total access.... IMHO, that vid is a evil joke for most DIY types on their back/jackstands, raining oil in your face, trying to follow the vids instructions. Maybe on a lift 6' in the air, with the sump plate being off for quite a while to slow down/stop the constant drip of oil in your face and on your camera lens, etc, then maybe(?) going from the sump is doable for all cylinders. Maybe not even then.... And be careful you don't crunch your camera while turning crank trying to get piston in right orientation to snake scope thru holes and get a good pic.... I challenge anyone to find any pics of any m96 engine that shows any meaningful(or any) bore score you can't see from the spark plug holes with piston @ bottom dead center....

In that case, remove the airbox to get to the crank? If I really need it, I can get on a lift.

Not sure why, but you've/we've all been purposely mislead, absolutely no need to scope from the sump to see problematic bore score.. Do yourself a favor, scope from the spark plug holes. If you have no bore score from the spark plug holes, YOU HAVE NO BORE SCORE problem.

I only Scope my engines from the wrist pin Hole on Bank 2.....I don't even worry about bank 1 and don't even have to drain the oil or remove any spark plugs...... Just remove one big plug in the front of the motor.... https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...cope+wrist+pin But also removing the Sump to have a good look to see whats in there is a very good thing to do ...

I find that video to be an exercise in someone talking to himself. I always scope it from the top and unless the owner is asking and paying for scoping bank 1 (they almost always do), I would just do bank 2 and be done. Recently, I had a chance to work on a F150 Ford truck engine and I found very similar marking inside two of the six cylinders. Yet, when I ran my finger across the marking, I felt no glitches at all. I am slowly changing my mind about how much time is left if all you see is similar marking like below. Notice the "marking" and its direction is not even aligned with the side where the con-rod is pivoting. That's a puzzle.
