picked up a used one and have question. Can I substitute any other RJ11 tipped cord (like a heavy duty phone cord) for the power cord? It seems it should work. Any ideas are appreciated.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Art_Z, Yes, ANY RJ-11 cord will work, but you need to make sure it has all 4 pins/wires in it not just 2! Enjoy the V1, it's the best radar detector I've ever used!
I tried to fix my V1 cord when the wire pulled out of the end, only to find that there is a slight difference between the original plastic plug and the replacement I bought from the hardware store. It really looked like it would fit, but it wouldn't clip in. Be sure you can test out the cable before buying it.
I picked up some extra RJ-11 jacks at Radio Shack, cut the V-1 power (phone) cord from 6' down to about 10", and crimped a new jack on the cut end. Worked great for hard-wiring it into the roof console's power feed on my wife's car.
