Hello everyone, Is there anything super special about recharging the A/C on a '99 911? I've tried to read up on it, but I never see an end result from anyone's posts. Seems like some try to buy the little kit and do it themselves, and some feel like it is a job from a professional. Should I try the DIY approach with a recharge kit from Autozone or take it to an indy? What should I expect to pay at an indy? Thanks! CR

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

First you need to confirm that a recharge is what is needed, modern systems almost NEVER leak refrigerant.
Before you purchase a recharge kit, take a look at this article reviewing the system and maintenance - may help with your A/C issue: 996 Air Conditioning Recharge & Maintenance Let us know what you find - thanks! Mark/Pelican Parts
There is nothing special about the 996 A/C system (compressor is made by Denso, maker of about half the A/C systems on planet earth.) If the system is not to badly contaminated then bringing it back up to full pressure will certainly help. If to much water vapor has gotten in the system then it needs to be pumped down before refilling. I'd throw a can at it and see if it still holds a charge. An indy should charge no more than $100 for a vacuum recharge and compressor lube. It makes sense to throw a can in to start with though just to see if it holds the charge. If not then at least you know you have bigger troubles.
