Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I recently swapped out my 996 C2 manual transmission as it was starting to whine (in all gears, under load), so I dropped the oil and found the common dark grey sludge/grease build up inside on the magnet next to the drain plug hole. The assumption is the pinion bearing has lost most of its grease and thus is causing the whine. I didn't have the time to send it away for a rebuild, however, luckily I obtained another low mileage gearbox and swapped it out and all is nice and quiet again. Question is, what to do with the old one and any idea what it's actually worth?

POST 2Original post

Its not worth much in is current condition. As u have found its not that hard to find a decent trans. Its worth core value or have it repaired and sell it at rebuilt valie.

POST 3Original post

Pistonheads and the places kit car guys hang out is where you can figure out its worth. Theres very little demand for them in 996 circles, but plenty of being still want them to strap to a V8.

POST 4Original post

If it were me, I would have it rebuilt and keep it as a spare. Or sell it as-is and someone like me would rebuild it to keep as a spare.

Yeh, seems the best plan.
