Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2000 Carrera 2 that if it sits for a few days will have a rattle that lasts about 2 seconds from the engine, it soes not do it on restart. The car has 55k miles on it and I recently had the cam chain tensioner paddles replaced, but not the tensioners. Any thoughts?

POST 2Original post

From what I've gathered it is the physical tensioners refilling and pressurizing with oil that cause this. Until they are full, and up to pressure, you get some noise. My '00 does this too. I've had to drive my 996 daily the past week since my wife's SUV was stolen and it doesn't make any startup noises. We we should be getting her a new SUV soon so I can have my DD back and the 996 can go back to fun only.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's what I thought, just didn't know if I should be concerned.

POST 4Original post

Before you relax, make sure you know what component is causing the rattle ? Chain slap because of leaky tensioners may be benign. But there are other rattle sources that are a death rattle. Engine Ear time ! Favorite tool of many Pcar Indies . You Tube

POST 5Original post

Two of the three chain tensioners are easy to change, you just need to lock the engine at tdc and you can remove them, the tensioner for the ims and bank 1-3 are easily accessible from underneath , change these and it may fix or reduce your problems, bank 4-6 tensioner is on top of the engine under the inlet manifold and harder to get at!

Thanks guys, all helpful information! I will have the car at the local independent shop and be there when they check it.
