Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

20 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

so with the IMS bearing deal what year 996 or 997 car is the best bet. I think I was told the Turbo cars dont have the bearing. If you were going to loyfor one what years? What year did they go to water cooled. I think air cooled would be better.

Then watch my 4 part video series with PCA. Just Google "PCA IMS" and it'll pop up.

^^^This^^^^ This discussion is beat to death, there has to be over 100 threads on here alone, let alone other porsche forums and google. If IMS issues scare you do not buy Porsches of this era.

Excluding race produced cars, the Porsche 986 Boxster that went into production in 1996 was the first water cooled Porsche? Of course, the 996 was the first 911 to be water cooled. Aircooled Porsches are closer to the original Porsche DNA and good luck finding a deal on those... prices have shot through the roof.

The Boxster was the first watercooled flat 6 road car. But Porsche built watercooled cars for years before the Boxster. 924, 944, 928 were all water cooled. So they built watercooled road cars way back in 1976.

Advice to newbies, don't ask IMS questions as your first post in the 996 forum.

POST 16Original post

^this! And maybe do a quick search before posting the most common question ever.

It still amazes me the bad wrap that these engines get from the IMS bearing, yet the LS7 engine in the Z06 Corvette's were dropping valves from bad guides like crazy, yet that motor is still understood to be a good motor aside from that. I feel the same way about the M96 personally.

POST 18Original post

IMO it suffers because the GT and Turbo engines with their dry sump and plain IMS bearing are so well made... Although, who cares - drive it - enjoy it

I agree with you 100%, its completely overated but try and tell that to a person who just spent 16-20k on a rebuild. You blow a chevy 350 any back yard mechanic can rebuild it in a weekend for 1500 bucks. Big difference!!!
