I recently had my car into my local independent who told me my left rear shock was shot. I never noticed anything while driving. Today I notice a small oil leak on the left rear of the car. The fluid is more like mineral oil, not motor oil. Is this the fluid leaking out of the shock? Thanks

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Call around and find a shop that has a shock dyno. If you shock is leaking, they should be able to rebuild your shock. I got a quote from Bilstein for $500 (all 4) so you shouldn't be looking at more than $100 plus the labor of R&R.
I agree with Dell, I would never take it back to the same shop that told me something was bad and then all of a sudden I have a new leak! It could be coincidence that he noticed it just as it began to leak, but why take a chance that you are being fleeced. I had it happen that I was told I needed brakes on a car, but they seemed fine until I got car back from them and it all of a sudden mushy. I took it to another place and they needed to be bled... Hmmmmm
