Since I am not really familiar with the sound of the C4S, maybe you guys can help. Engine tends to whine especially in the 3500 rpm range. Its not a whistle but it is annoying. It may be normal but I guess I hear it more because of the cab. Desciptions of what the engine should sound like would be appreciated. Thanks.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The whine actually occurs between 2000 and 3000 rpm and its more prominent in 1st and 2nd gears. Doesnt sound ominous but it bugs me.
Oh dear, that's the exact explanation I gave to my service Engineer at the dealer. It turns out my gearbox is hosed. I am looking for a replacement.
Spoke with dealer and he said its normal to have engine whine in the 911 during the breakin period...certainly hope he is right!
Well I would ensure you have that in writing. SH*T does happen. And it normally happens the day after your warranty period runs out.
I have a ways to go on the warranty...just got the car 3 days ago.
Mumanoff, Next time you're at the dealer, just take another new 911 for a spin to see if what you're hearing is indeed normal. More fun and takes less time than going the service route. I doubt that the sales guys will mind indulging your concern. Personally I think all 911's/Boxsters whine. -DT
