So I had a local shop perform the Fister D mod on my 2002 Targa, sounds great. Problem I have now is that they painted my mufflers with some sort of black paint (not per my request), and I can smell the paint (burning?) after a spirited drive. I thought it would go away after awhile, but can still smell it after a few months. My concern is that they might actually catch on fire at my next track day. Not sure what the shop would do if if went back there as I doubt you can remove the paint. Should I be worried, and if so, what are my options here? Thanks, Chris

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Don't worry about it. How many miles since the painting? Next time you want the Fister mod..............actually send them to FDM! Plus they ceramic coat, not paint. Quality never costs more.
I painted mine with silver high temp coating, didn't really smell after one proper drive.
Are you sure it is not the 996 "Eau DU Porsche"? Tire dust cooking off the mufflers after a good drive.
I'm sure it's the paint, smell started happening right after I had the work done, and the mufflers were visibly smoking on my drive home from the muffler shop... Guy said they might smell for a few days, but it's been a few months and a couple thousand miles or so. I was surprised today looking at them that the muffler is directly exposed to the rear tires, seems to me that the mufflers would cook the tires. I was convinced the muffler shop left some shielding off until I saw pictures of other 996's with exposed mufflers.
Something's not right if you smell it after a few months. If it really bothers you, take them off and spray them with aircraft quality paint stripper. But paint definitely should've cured by now.
Left muffler cooks the expansion tank.
See if the muffler heat shields were re installed. The mufflers could be cooking the inside of the bumper.
Usually when there is exhaust work, you can expect a burning smell. Lots of oils touch the metal and burn off (even oils from your hands). If it's painted, the paint is baking on. The spray could be a thermal coating, which would help with keeping heat in the exhaust and the gasses moving out of the exhaust more quickly. Long story short, don't worry about it.
sounds like amateur night, what are they doing painting the mufflers? id look for a better independant shop....jmo
