Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just won an eBay auction for a set of the 977 wheels with a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 2's N1 tires. The seller says there are less then 2,500 miles on these tires, but i'm a little skeptical after looking at the pictures. ...but i hear these tires dont have a lot of tread to begin with. What do you guys think? only 2,500 mi on these? thanks a lot. Ryan also, i have a set of 4 factory 18" hurricaines on my 996 to sell now. I think the seller of my new wheels will put them up for auction if no other buyers.

POST 3Original post

see if u can get him to put a penny in between the tread and take a photo...i'm having some problems diffrenciating how much tread is left. I think that might be a bit low, but at 1600$ rims included...19"s at that, its not a bad deal.

POST 4Original post

Just eyeballing them, that is WAY MORE than 2500 miles. However, depending on driving style that could very easily be truthfull. Which is why there should be one of two type of requirements for selling "non-new" tires. Either they need to state they are takeoffs with no miles or they need to state they are customer driven and have x/32" of tread left. But stating 2500 miles is a crap shoot.

POST 5Original post

Ryan, I'm gonna have to disagree with Dell on this one. These tires have a tread depth of 10/32" when brand new. The wear bars are set at 2/32" or 1/16th" (I can do math too). From the picture it looks like you have 3-4 wear bars of tread height remaining. Given a set of soft rear tires last approx 10K miles (especially if it's the passenger rear since the 996 and 997 don't have LSD and that's the "drive wheel"), I don't think the 2500 mi estimate is unreasonable. Look here for the tire specs: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...h=true&index=3 That's just my free opinion... Tonger

POST 6Original post

Not quite sure what you are disagreeing with. I stated that depending on driving style that could easily be 2500 miles as in not unreasonable to claim. But that is NOT 2500 based on normal driving. However, and this is a big however, not a SINGLE one of us can actually make anything other than an uniformed opinion (a guess) without knowing for sure what the tread depth is.

POST 7Original post

Could be 2500 miles, but could be 2500 track miles, too. New, PS2s have the same amount of tread as most tires or 10/32" or 1/4" usable. From the looks of pic #2, these were either driven really hard or tracked. Pic #2 is also probably a front tire and looks like the insides have about 3/32" to 4/32" and the outsides about 5/32" to 6/32". Pic #1, a rear, looks 2/32" inside and about 3 or 4/32". I would consider them bald because the lowest point is when you replace as they are no longer legal. I think the seller was careful in which pics were shown. IMNSHO, the tires are hardly worth the weight to ship them if you alreay have experience with PS2s. If the wheels are good, then still may be a good deal.

POST 8Original post

I say these still have decent life on them and probly worth a few hundred on tires alone. I am guessing 50-60% in the first pic and 80% in second pic. The first pic is a bit small but if it's rears, it'd make sense since rears wear faster. How many miles is irrelevant.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks - makes sense. I'm a little sketched out now as i expected 4 rims with almost new tires. may not be the case...

POST 10Original post

At $1,600 you got a screaming deal. Those wheels would probably cost you at least $3K new and a new set of tires would add over $1k. The wear doesn't look too bad to me.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks Ray - Agreed - the $1600 is worth it for the rims alone. ..just thought i could have been a bit deceived by the tires when he stated there's less than 2,500 mi. on them.
