About time I say: http://www.reuters.com/article/busin...e=businessNews What's the deal with trying to buy Volkswagen when you *don't* have the money to do so? I know it'smore complicated than that, but now MAYBE they can concentrate on building sports cars rather than a manufacturing empire. It will be interesting to see where the Qataris take the company.

There will be more to come on the future of 'Porsche' - my 'opinion' is that the 996 debacle helped to push Porsche to the brink:
Take the Engineering control away from the Accountants... Doing so will make a Porsche what it was 20-30 years ago.
How long till Porsche interiors start looking like Audi's, Like in the Lambo's ? Don't get me wrong, Audi does the best interiors but I prefer Porsche to be Porsche,
Mr M96 gone? About time!
Just be thankful we didn't make the CLUNKER List like these folks... From Edmunds.com, the Porsche portion of the Cash for Clunkers qualifiers: 1990 Porsche 944 3L 4-Cyl 5M RWD Passenger Car 1991 Porsche 944 3L 4-Cyl 5M RWD Passenger Car 1992 Porsche 968 3L 4-Cyl 6M RWD Passenger Car 1993 Porsche 968 3L 4-Cyl 6M RWD Passenger Car

Hey! What was wrong with the '73-'77 2.7L's......
We've been watching this on the 997 list a lot: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/24/bu....html?_r=2&hpw http://www.porsche-se.com/pho/en/new...d=2009-07-23-3 Also, a very good article with the family history for background (Der Spiegel): http://www.spiegel.de/international/...637243,00.html Be happy that you own a Porsche when it was a Porsche.
What... its not like we dont have VW, Audi parts on our cars already... its just formalized now. "Porsche would become the 10th brand in Volkswagen's sweeping automotive empire."
The Volkswagen existed over a decade before the first Porsche and lets don't forget who designed the Beetle..VW parts have coupled to Porsche vehicles in tons of applications in the past, and usually the VW part can be bought for 1/3 the price and is no different.
It's the battle of the Capulets and Montagues all over again but with a fortune of assets tied along to it...
Maybe our 996s' depreciation curve will finally start to level off... now that they are sure to become "collectible." hahahahahahahahahah! ROTF(of my garage)LOL with one eye on my RMS as always.

As sh!tty as the M96 issue is it had nothing to do with this. Porsche sold more 996 and 986 than all other Porsche models combined and at least partially because they are really good cars that people liked. They sold more of them, and they were realy profitable for Porsche because they were buily efficiently unlike the cars that came before. The 996 and 986 brought Porsche to a whole new level and that's the one thing Wiedeking can be proud of. He saved the company. He's leaving because he gambled big and lost. It's business, and german business to boot. Don't think for a second that the Porsche family is worried about the M96 motors. They're no more worried about the M96 than they were about pulled head studs, exploding air boxes, rubber centred clutches, you name it.
It's like a Homecoming of sorts..... Willkommen!

Hhmm - check out Macht's bio: Michael Macht, born in Stuttgart in 1960, studied Mechanical Engineering at Stuttgart University and was scientist at Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO, before he started his career at Porsche AG in 1990, becoming specialist for engine planning. After serving as Directors Assistant with respect to production and materials management, concept and the organization of the PVP Porsche improvement process, he became Chairmans Aisstant, developing and implementing the so called P.O.L.E. program, short for process optimization through supplier integration. In 1994 he was promoted to Managing Director of the freshly founded Porsche Consulting GmbH and in 1998 became Member of the Board of Management in charge of Production and Logistics of Porsche AG. His work is centered around increasing efficience in production. Macht was in charge of the building and start of operation for the Leipzig factory as well as the wramp up of the model lines Cayenne and Panamera 1) He's an engineer. 2) He ran the engine development program in the 90's (when the M96 was designed). 3) He was in charge of process efficiency and optimization when the M96 was built. Macht is more responsible for the M96 than Wiedeking every will be. Wiedeking was an accountant. Do you *really* still think the M96 had anything to do with the restructuring? c'mon.

doesn't matter - Porsche is 'toast'.
At least this is vindication for my 996 -long time considered not a real Porsche by the air-cooled purists- now at least I can say it is NOT a VW...
Wiedeking and Piech have had a power struggle for years. That probably influenced Wiedeking's decision to rack up 9 billion Euros trying to take over VW. Funny though, whenver Piech has a power struggle with someone, he always comes out on top. When we covered the 100th anniversary of Audi last week, they all looked to be in happy spirits: And given the closeness of the two companies and the technical sharing, this just makes sense and will be beneficial to Porsche in the long run. The current automotive market doesn't allow for successful small auto manufacturers. Considering you already have Bentley, Bugatti, and Lamborghini owned by VW, it's not a bad thing by any means to add Porsche to the list. - Anthony

And maybe finally put an end to the ridiculously expensive potlatching (at the huge expense of both companies) that has gone on between the two families for decades.

Poor old Weideking I think really got embroiled in the family fight over Porsche that started in the 60s. As someone pointed out, competition with Piech is at your peril. Recalling when Piech (also a Porsche) was in control of Porsche racing, he built the 906,907,908,917 etc. in a very short time to beat his racing competition at every level. When Porsche handed the 917 program to John Wyer to manage, Piech entered his own cars under his mom's Porsche Salzburg company name. When Piech was finally shown the door at Porsche (along with his Porsche named cousins) he emerged as CEO of Audi. The guy defines a competitive person. Ferdinand Porsche, Ferry Porsche and Louise Piech (nee Porsche) must be rolling in their graves on Zell am See over what their issue have wrought.

So true about the parts and the history. And it could yield some new cars, like a porsche version of the upcoming VW sports car. Something along the lines of a 914 replacement. I recall reading, back when Porsche was starting to take an aggressive position on VW stock, that part of the justification was ensuring parts supply from VW into the future. Why that would be a concern, I do not know. But one way or another things got a bit out of control. As for parts. . . this is seriously OT, but can anyone explain to my why the lights that illuminate the license plate on my 996 have little BMW logos . . . ? I find that particularly odd and amusing. The presence of VW/Audi parts seems natural.

let me correct that for you ...... there .. fixed
Quotes source post: 6787951
This started because VW was in financial trouble and no one in Germany wanted a forgien company to come in and take over VW. Mercedes had its troubles with Chrysler, BMW had no interest so Porsche stepped up and bought enough stock to keep any others away on the guise of protecting their parts supply......and then it went terribly wrong based on greed, family and imperialism(maybe out of order but you get the picture). Now we can look forward to the return of the 917 with a Bugatti motor in it and Mr. Piech can take his place as the head of Porsche Motorsport again to dominate the world racing stage...or maybe not, but it sounds good?
