Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I might have to trade in my 03 C4S for a family car, I was able to get a very good deal on a new 05 E500 4M. What do you guys think, will I be satisfied with the E500? Power, handling, or is there just no substitute! This is my third P-Car: 71 911S 80-85 93 964C2, 93-03 03 996C4S, 03 - present Thanks Alain

POST 2Original post

Get the new M5 - the driving dynamics, while not in the same league as your C4S, are a lot better than any E class

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes but the new M5 is not AWD. The attraction of the E500 is the very good deal.

POST 5Original post

good point - i neglected to see your sig and where you live what about an Audi RS6 - or a 1 year old Cayenne 'S'? As you may notice I'm not a MB fan... I actually have no idea how much a E500 is so i'm probably talking out of my ***......

POST 6Original post

I Have an E5004M as my daily driver. Nice quiet, comfortable and competent car. Excellent in the snow and great for long trips. Not exciting to drive, does not begged to be flogged into corners and never says "take me to the track". It is a very competent sedan that makes no pretensions to being a sports car. You cannot compare them. If you drive your C4S like a sedan, then perehaps you will be happy. Somehow I don't think that's the case. Note that I have had a 540i with sport pac and an Audi A6 Quattro, none of them was a sports car either in spite of the bimmer having the "sport package - which was a fill in until the got a new M5 out. It had all the right stuff, 6 spd manual, bbs wheels, lowered suspension, huge brakes, sports seats. It was nice to drive but never said "take me to the track". If you still want an AWD sedan, check out the Acura RL it is worth a look if you're thinking E class. regards,

You'll be happy with the Merc for a family car and be in the market for a Porsche next year as dad's little sports car!

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Bob, Thanks for the review, this is exactly the response I was looking for, or maybe I should have asked, "Will the E500 drive like a C4S?" and the answer is no. I like taking the car deep into the corners, late apex and such, expecting not too much roll and a fast exit. Thanks guys, you convinced me. After driving a Porsche for over 13 years, it will be difficult doing without one. The ads are correct, There's no substitute! Alain

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You're right! Better keep the C4S I have now. Wonderful car.

POST 10Original post

I agree with Bob about the Mercs, I had a 560 SEC, and yes it was reasonably powerful, it was still an automatic and really wasn't that much fun to drive. My '82 928 was slower than the 560, but it was alot more fun to drive because it was 5-speed manual. But if your looking for an auto, the E500 is a great choice. My brother-in-law has an E350 and its pretty nice. How about a new 5 series with a manual trans. or an Audi S4/6? Are you looking for new or pre-owned. If your not looking for new, then a previous generation,E39 I think, M5 would be nice, besides the fact that they drink gas like a Hummer H1. Someone above mentioned a Cayenne S, not a bad idea either. Although I wish Porsche would sell the Cayenne S with a manual trans in US, like in the UK and Europe. Lou

POST 11Original post

I have a family of 4 and my 996 works just fine as a family car...sans the stroller :-)

POST 12Original post

In the past 3 years, I've owned an '02 BMW 540i, '04 Porsche Cayenne S, '03 BMW M3, and '01 BMW M5. I currently drive an '02 Porsche C4S. The M3 provides similar driving dynamics/fun as the C4S, and is surprisingly practical. The rear seats are surprisingly comfortable for adults, and the trunk is spacious. The M5 sacrifices nothing on the luxury/refinement/practical front, but quite frankly, the driving dynamics are not in the same class as th C4S and M3. The Cayenne S actually was a funner car to drive than the 540i as well as the M5. I test drove the Mercedes-Benz E55, and while it is luxurious, refined, and fast, it provides no driving excitement. There's no sensation of speed either. My preferences with fun to drive as the sole criteria: 1. Porsche C4S 2. BMW M3 3. Porsche Cayenne S (with air suspension) 4. BMW M5 5. BMW 540i Looking at where you live, and your stated needs, I'd recommend that you give the Cayenne a look. It's steering accuracy and feel are typical Porsche, with the air suspension set to low/firm the handling and body control is shocking for an SUV and even impressive for a sport sedan, the V-8 induction growl and charge from 4000 rpm to redline is addicitive, and the build quality is again typical Porsche.
