Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Got back from a long business trip, car sat for a week or so, not unusual, but this morning on start up I notice a defined "ticking" sound at idle from left rear. Worried because it sounds like a valve going bad? Oil level is fine. Stayed rather noticable for a few miles until at normal op. temp. Did not notice any loss of performance, but up to this 32K miles (just had 30K service) I have been trouble free and have never heard this! Is this the sign of soemthing bad? I 'm under warranty till November. Anyone out there experienced this? I'll see if it happens again before the commute home. Brad '02 Coupe H&R Orange Plug K&N GHL LOUD B&M Need new tires!

POST 2Original post

That exact thing happened to me on my return from Spain (2800 mile trip). Left the car for a week and when started got that awful tappety noise. My independent said it was normal although he did fix something on the oil separator switch. Anyway that was teo weeks ago and the noise has gone (mostly). Did the noise go away after you drove it for a while?

POST 3Original post

Brad, I personally let the vehicle sit for a minute or two until the RPMs drop down..... Do you start it and drive right away? It's normal to hear a little ticking right at start up but only for the first few seconds when it's cold..... -Eli

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Scouser: The noise went away after a few miles when normal op. temp was reached. Eli: I always do what you do. Let idle for a minute or two, RPM's drop, I go.....always mindful of keeping revs low unitl normal oil and water temps are reached. This was definetely a new sound. Almost sounded like an exhaust leak, but not. Maybe another visit to dealer?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yup. Why not? Calling the dealer today for appt. Thanks.

POST 7Original post

Mine is there already..... Hopefully out by the weekend.... -Eli The M3 is getting some miles......

POST 8Original post

It's nothing to worry about. My parent's E class does the same thing after a week or two of storage. Once the car is driven at op temp, it's returns normal.
