Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm about to do my first Autocross event this weekend and wanted to get some consumer feedback on helmets that offer the best value? I don't intend to do too many track days or autocross events as this is my daily driver, however, I don't want to borrow the sweat boxes that get rented out either! Pyrotect seem to get a good rating and are in the budget? Is 'SA' rating the way to go? Or if I go with an 'M' rated helmet will I encounter some issues at other events who demand a higher rating? Any other thoughts?

POST 2Original post

They're all shaped a little differently, so the best one to get is the one that fits most snuggly & comfortably on your head. Try on a bunch and you'll know quickly which is the right one for you. Price should be a secondary consideration (ask anyone who's been in an accident). "M" will probably do, but I would get "SA". You may want to do some events down the road that require "SA". "SA" are also designed for a different type of impact (in a car), hence the different rating. Make sure it's the latest standard (2005 now IIRC). A lot of folks online want to sell you a "never used" helmet that's been sitting in the back of their closet for years and may be unsafe due to age and won't pass tech inspection.

If you're just looking for autocross, Pyrotect gets the job done cheaply. You're not wearing the helmet for an extended period of time, so as long as it's reasonably comfortable, you'll be fine. M rated helmets are acceptable for autocross, based on SCCA requirements.

I have a Bell SR Pro and love it. The cutout is larger than usual - so visibility is excellent. They are on sale here: http://www.bellhelmets.com/index.cfm...category_id=12

Have a couple of Bell M2's that served me well

POST 6Original post

There are lots of brands which offer safe inexpensive helmets which are SA rated and Snell 2005 certified e.g. Bell, Simpson, G-Force, Pyrotect etc. Make sure you get 2005 rated. 2000 will expire sooner and is not really worth the discount. You might as well buy an SA (Special Applications) which is for automobiles. Some clubs do not allow M rated helmets for HPDE. The Snell impact certification for M (Motorcycle) rated helmets is not exactly the same as for SA. The general theory is that in a motorcycle crash there is a single big impact (e.g. head hits road), while in a car there are multiple impacts (e.g. head bounces into the roll bar). SA helmet liners have to be fire retardant. M helmets generally have a bigger eyeport, although some SA helmets models have a wide eyeport. The most important 3 things about a helmet are fit, fit and fit. Buy the tightest helmet you can stand which does not give you a headache or pressure spots after wearing it for 10 minutes in the shop. The liner will pack down after wear so a helmet that is comfy in the store will be too loose after use. If you buy from http://www.apexperformance.net they are a rennlist sponsor and there is a 10% discount.
