Took a drive in the 996 on Sunday down to the Chesapeake bay with my wife and 4 y.o. Checked out the ordnance museum at Aberdeen, drove around, ate some crabs (give a 4 y.o. a hammer and he's happy for hours), and drove home. The 996 was comfortable, smooth riding, quiet on the highway, the AC was powerful and dealt with an 87 degree sunny day with ease. Engine temp was rock steady, even when we got into stop and go traffic for a while. The interior is huge--that little bit of extra wheelbase sure gives lots of room in the back seat without sliding the passenger seat all the way forward.

I must have a different model. There is no one I could stick in the back seat. I am 6'4" and the seat is all the way back and I could not even stick my hand behind my seat let alone try to stick a foot down in there. I am comfortable up front and the room is fine for me but that back seat holds a coat or a bag from the store at most. I agree the ride is great, A/C works just fine with our 100 plus temps, and the heated seat are awsome for our cold 40 degree days.

You are welcome!!!!
I put on 500 miles two weekends ago attending American Le Mans at Limerock and then Boston after. No problems and cold AC all the time.
I have not taken the 996 on a really long trip yet but i did drive my old Boxster S down to Myrtle beach a few years ago and even that car was a pleasure, the 2 trunks gave us plenty of room. AC was great. This was however "Pre- daughter" so it was just the 2 of us. I'm sure the 996 would be even better on a long trek! I have taken my 86 on some long trips in the past an always felt beat after a long trip. My old 951 was just as good as any "modern 911" on long trips.
Jon: Great story for sure. Enjoy those precious moments! We've taken the Porsche on many multi-day roadtrips with the PCA folks. From LA to Sequoia Natl Park, to Yosemite, to the Grand Canyon, to Monterey/Carmel. And I still believe this is the ultimate family car for a single kid family - I'm also 6'2" and no way would anyone fit behind me.
the ultimate family car.... pse quiet mode is also a big plus when the fam is with me.
Just turned over 114K on my 99 996 Cab. I am 6' 7" and this is one of the most comfortable performance cars I have ever owned.
Driven mine to Minnesota, California, and all over B.C. - great car for a road trip.
I take the E55 when we go on drives like you describe
When my dd was the 993, any family trip over a half-hour was an automatic, "take the Audi" but it's nice now to have the option. Left to make the choice, the boy will always pick Porsche. Labor day is in Boston this year. Four and a half hours? We'll see how it goes. When I was growing up, my hippie parents had at one point bought a Renault, after which they could only buy more of the evil beasts, since no one else would pay anything for a Renault trade-in. I spent many a road trip in the back of an R10, so I know just how luxurious it is to ride in a 996 rear seat.
Mine (a C4) has been great in everything from snow in winter (winter tires) to summer track days or family drives (toddler in rear w/car seat). Sadly, I cannot drive it right now, but I hope to get it back soon!!! ...can hardly wait.
I drove my 996 from Los Angeles, CA to Fort Wayne, IN when I bought it. It was a roughly 2,100 mile drive. I agree - it's a great road car. I can't imagine trying to put a person in the back seat, but I guess it is all relative. When we need a back seat, we take the Cayenne.
My 9 year-old sits back there just fine. But she prefers the SUV because she thinks my car is too bumpy and loud. I'm trying to make her a Porsche fan but she's not having any of it yet! Hell I even promised her a Boxster or Cayman as a first vehicle

She'll come around. My 14 and 16 year-old boys are 6'2" (so far) and 6'5". The back seat in the 996 may as well not be there. Even the Cayenne's back seat is crowded. They would both kill for a Boxster or a Cayman. Instead, they are rolling in style in a 1995 Volvo!

My 17 year old daughter wants a Cayenne. Made the mistake and let her drive the dealer loaner I got one day. Now her 2000 Dodge Durango w/5.9 is just crap. I told her to start saving.
996 is comfortable, but not quiet enough to do handsfree business calls in. (I wonder why! ) My Land Rover LR3 is super quiet by comparison - and that's one thing I need for my daily driver. No issues driving 7 hrs out to Arizona in the 996 on family trips - it eats up the miles, and is a very comfortable seating position even for all day driving.

Sure beats my first ride...A 1974 Beetle that cost me $400 back in 1991. Wow what are you feeding these boys?!? I hope I can get to be 6'5" when I grow up! Once it's her money then the Durango will seem more then sufficient huh?
