On the way home from dinner tonight I noticed a light flashing on the high end of the temp guage. The manual states that the flashing light is tripped by a malfunctioning engine compartment fan. I did some research and apparantly it's a common problem with early 996s. There is a TSB calling for an updated coolant reservoir. After reading some more on the subject it appears that Porsche is now on it's 3rd tank design. The design issue with the first gen tanks allows the coolant to flow away from the sensor under heavy acceleration and trip the warning light. Doesn't sound like it causes any harm leaving the old tank in, at least until there is a real need to change it (like when it turns yellow and cracks )...what do you guys think?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had mine blinking after doing donuts in my cul-de-sac last winter. The temp reading dropped to zero. 15 miles into my commute the next day it started working. Interestingly, my front radiator fans did not come on while the gauge was not working and started to work when the temp gauge fixed itself. My computer showed the indicator failure initially, but seems to have forgotten about it. I have not had it to the dealer since the episode.
Here is the long explanation from the service manual on the flashing coolant light. (Covers all Carrera, GT3, TT / GT2 and Boxster cars) "Four functions of the coolant warning light: 1. Engine coolant level too low -- light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz) 2. Engine compartment temperature too high -- light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz) (engine compartment blower might be faulty) 3. Engine coolant temperature too high -- light is lit; pointer on the right 4. Temperature sensor at water outlet faulty -- light flashes rapidly (1 Hz) ; pointer on the right Note: The temperature warning in point three is indicated if the conditions "engine coolant temperature too high" and "engine coolant level too low" are present simultaneously."
Have you "eaten" any more donuts since then???...
NOPE !!!
