Wondering with all the threads on putting higher displacement engines in the 996 (300 hp vs 320 hp up to 380 hp, etc.) if anyone has bumped the performance in the Cayenne V8 and retro-fitted it into a 996? This is motivated by the success of the Daytona Proto or ALMS Proto last year where they bumped up into a Cayenne V8. A few disclaimers: I know the prototypes are different then the 911's. I know the best performance comes from seat time--not HP. I know everyone in this forum prefers the look of our salvador dali headlights so wouldn't want anything in the back of the car to affect those! And last, I have no interest in such an investment, just wondering if a Cayenne V8 has been contemplated for our sleds. Correction: I know Ed has contemplated it and wondering what he thinks. How about everyone else.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

from what I understand this engine is really tall and will not fit in any thing else. They talked about it on the 928 board but it just wouldnt fit under the hood.
Why? GT3 engine will fit with the same power, less weight, race tuning and lower mass. Better way to go would be to reduce weight from the 996. 7lbs = 1 HP + improved braking and handling
Not disagreeing but why did the Proto team do that last year then? Increased reliability? Ed, surely you've tried it?

Just something appealing about the flat 6 being hung over the back axle. There have been some that have put Chevy V8s back there, sure lots of HP but it's just not the same. The soul of the 911 lies in funkyness of the whole package. It's not there with the Boxster, Cayman, Panamerica or anything else produced by the car company. I love the 911, the Boxster is fun too and unique but not a 911, the Cayenne would be a ways down the list for an SUV, the Panamerica unthinkable. My take.
Why didn't they put our flat 6 in the Cayenne? Could there be some advantage to flicking a V8 in if it would fit?

That was a long time ago. We have a modern engine back there--the latest cars an even more modern one. The marketing department ensures that there are enough vague similarities so that the message stays somewhat reasonable, but the soul is very new. Nothing wrong with that. If we didn't like it, we'd drive old Porsches. Draw the line wherever you're comfortable, but most of those lines have already been crossed.
I think the reason is the M96 is more reliable than the Cayenne motor
The Cayenne V8 is huge, no doubt about that. I'm sure it's quite heavy too. My Cayenne S has 340HP, which isn't really much of an upgrade over my 320HP C4S.

Well said. There is a uninqueness (funkiness) to the experience of driving a 911. And I disagree that this has been left behind in my 2001 996. Until I bought the 2001 a few weeks ago, it had been 12+ years since I had driven a 911 (used to own an '82 911SC). The 996 feels like a more modern, more powerful and somewhat more refined version of my old 911SC but the overall "feel" is still intact. Driving it is like being united with an old friend. It's good to be back in the saddle again.

Yes. It's called torque. With that much mass and the job it's supposedly built to do, lots of twist at low rpm is mandatory. This is not among the charms of the flat 6

Yeah but what about the power curve and touque.. I bet they are A LOT different.
There has to be a reason why they put one in last years' daytona prototype (and won) and why they chose not to put the flat six in the Cayenne. For all the crazy engine swaps that go on, if it would physically fit, I'm surprised one of our fellow lunatics (and I mean that affectionately) hasn't tried it.
