Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

While chillin' waiting for my kids I synched the clock on the 11-year old instrument panel and my two-year old Alpine radio to my iPhone (synched to the nuclear clocks on the GPS satalites). Almost a month later my instrument clock has only lost a second or two and the clock on the new Alpine has gained over :30 secs. I respect it but kind of wish that money had gone into the suspension or somewhere else. How can the clock be right on but the speedo be 4 mph hot? If that accuracy only costs a nickel I wish Alpine had invested that. Like the title hints: This belongs in the "whatever" category. Merry Christmas to all.

POST 2Original post

Accuracy of the speedo is off intentionally by most all manufacturers, and up to 10%-12% optimistic. It's not cost related, and could be dead nuts on when the tires are new and properly inflated, it's just something they universally choose to do. I had the P-car dealer recal the one on my wife's Boxster years ago, and it was right on at 85mph according to my gps. I understand on most modern cars the speedo can be off but not the odo.

POST 3Original post

Don't complain, my 997's clock looses minutes a week. It is the only thing that annoys me incredibly. Precision engineered with a brutal clock... .pfft.

POST 4Original post

It's actually federally mandated that the speedo (and odometer) can't be slow, it has to be spot on or be fast. So, most manufacturers make their speedos optimistic to cover their own butts...

POST 5Original post

Maybe the alpine is right, and your Porsche, GPS, Satellites, and nuclear world clocks are off.

POST 6Original post

GPS's are off a bit to start with. I'm a ham radio nut and if you can tune to WWV on 5, 10, or 15MHz and compare the time to what the GPS displays you'll see some big differences some times. WWV is mainline atomic time instead of be paranoid and don't want a kid to be able to have an accurate position below a 30 foot resolution thats dependable. The time being goofy on GPS civilian side broadcasts is what makes the calculations be off for location. One thing I miss about the german radio's is the SW bands. Yah we are locked into being subjected to only american commercials on our radios and can't listen to world wide braodcasts unless you install a ham radio. What's real funny is in Afghanistan you can pick up a full satelite system of dish and receiver for $100. Hundreds of free channels, till you get to america where you are screwed. Gotta love laws/airwaves for sale. PS Alpine I guess doesn't make a very accurate clock.
