Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Can anyone shed light on this question. My 2002 has them, but they are not listed as an option. Seems like some 996.2s have them, some don't. Was it random? Where they factory, aftermarket? I know some people have sanded and painted the textured versions. At some point were the black rubber versions switched over to a smoother surface? Is there a hard plastic cap on the painted versions? Mine seems like that, rather than painted rubber. Confusion. Somebody knows something.

POST 2Original post

My 99 had the rubberized version that bolted on. The 02+ appear to have tabs on them that are melted to the rear bumper and were painted hard plastic. Are there unpainted 02+?

I think MKII's came painted, MKI did not...unless you went to bumperplugs.com and sent them to Eric to have him paint them on your Mk1. DS

That is what I thought. But I know of 2002s with black rubber.

The 2002 996TT has rubber bumperettes - and they are a different part than the Carrera. Which does the C4S have?

The C4S and turbo have the same butts, so... they're the same: unpainted black rubber.

POST 8Original post

Narrowbody cars switched to painted w/the 2002 facelift. Widebody cars were not offered with painted bumperettes from the factory.

Not absolutely... I know of several 2002s with rubber. Maybe it was a mid-year update?

POST 13Original post

I don't have the definitive answer, but my 04TT came with black rubber and I painted them myself. It's about two hours of effort over a two day period. I think the 997 models all came with painted. I don't think I've ever seen a 997 with black rubber bumperettes.

POST 15Original post

Eric at Bumperplugs does a good job. Mine have held up very well over 7+ years.

My 2002 C4 Cab also has painted.

No sir, the narrow body face lift bumper is not made for unpainted bumprettes, the actual bumper behind the cover for all U.S. cars is the same through all MK2 narrow body cars (C4/C4 cab, C2/C2 cab, GT3, 40th AE) and thus not interchangeable with the unpainted style. Facelift narrowbody = painted. As a note, calling them painted is slightly misleading, it's a design change. The later style is a cover that is attached to the bumper cover, whereas the MK1 cars (and the widebody cars) have bumprettes that are seperate pieces that bolt onto the actual bumper through the bumper cover.
