Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

23 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I need to replace the MAF -- dealer did readout for CEL and found code P1126 -- "Read out fault codes, fault P1126 present. Checked actual running values of oxygen sensing adaptation, found adaptation values just over threshold to trigger check engine light. Mass air flow sensor is the cause of this fault." We reset the CEL and I drove for three weeks to see if the CEL would come on again -- which it did in regular driving yesterday. The dealer wants $500+ to do the replacement (including the part). Is this a simple plug and play item where it's worth the savings to get the part from Suncoast and install it (in my case having my regular mechanic for my other cars, a Mercedes guy, do it), or should I just have the dealer do it? Does anyone have a photo of where the MAF is or a parts diagram? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Yes, it is plug and play. You dont even need any special tools. You can grip the retaining screws with a pair of pliers by grabbing the OD of the screw heads. The plug is just a plug.

Hmmm...mine needed security torx to get out...but mine is a turbo all you need to know

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 6887527

Yep, regular 996's have security torx also but the torque is null since it is in plastic.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 6887590

huh? you mean you just yank it out...that can't be good?

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 6887685

No. The screws are threaded into plastic so there is virtually no torque. You can grab the outside of the heads with pliers to remove and replace. A little shade-tree but it works just fine.

POST 10Original post

And many folks think this car is hard to work on. I think that is an assumption that have helped to generate substantial profits for the dealers.

POST 12Original post

bought all the security bits for an interchanageble screwdriver (including the Torx security bit for the MAF) $3.99(?) at HARBOR FRIEGHT. All came in a nice rubber case, too.

Yep. Got mine there too.

POST 18Original post

If the Porsche tech definitively stated that an 1126 code is a bad MAF, have another tech look at it. All a P1126 indicates is that bank 2 is running lean off throttle, which can be caused by half a dozen things other than a MAF.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 6895645

Fouled injector(s), fuel pressure low, intake leak, worn O2 sensor, fuel volume low and exhaust leaks can all cause the same error code.

POST 21Original post

What year is the car? and what is the mileage?

POST 22Original post

Quotes source posts: 6894895, 6895690

+1 I've been getting CEL about once a week for some time; either P1126 or P1128. What these codes are communicating is that the DME cant make the fuel mixture rich enough. Because the codes are occurring on both the left and right sides its likely not a fuel injector issue. After some research I'm in a process of doing the following: 1. Check oil cap. This I have done, I think I will replace it or see if I can find a replacement o-ring. 2. Try and put a vacuum on the intake system and see if it holds. Researching how to do that right now. 3. Replace fuel filter, will likely just do it. 4. Replace air/oil separator, expensive item will make sure 1 to 3 are done first. Then if all this fails replace the MAF.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 6896791

You're right that the O2 sensors are trying to richen the mixture, but an 1126 and 1128 are totally different. 26 is a problem at idle and a 28 is a problem on throttle.
