I changed out my air filter today and noticed that there is a soft spongy material in the bottom of the housing. It has completely disintegrated and falls apart in my hands. What function does this material serve? Does it need to be replaced? What is part number if so? In trying to find the part number for this material, I was unable to use the link I had available for the 996 PET. Is there an updated link available? Thanks.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I cleaned that piece out completely as it was disintegrated. It has been a long time back and I do not notice any side effects. I did ask about the purpose of that foam piece at the time but did not get any specific/definite answer. Seems like it could be for sound dampening?
Thanks. That sounds like a reasonable purpose. I have removed it and the retaining plastic screen to ensure no debris will clog the new air filter.
