Apparently my 996 engine failure was not IMS related as I had been initially advised. Upon removal of the motor, it seems that a connecting rod went through the top of the motor and took some bearings with it. DeMan motorsport has put the new engine in and I'll get it back pretty soon. As Porsche won't accept the core charge, I am now in possession of a busted block. Anyone need some cylinder heads?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I bet you lost oil pressure, the rod seized to the crank jounal, and out the rod was spit. Sucks. PM "99firehawk" about your block and heads.
Is this replacement on your dime or warranty? If so, that blows!
What year is your car?
Wow, I've seen that happen on flat-4s before, but not really on a stock 6....
My race motor just had a complete failure that appears to have been caused by too much oil overwhelming the oil seperator in a long high G corner which resulted in oil being pumped into the intake. Turns out, oil doesn't compress real well, rods seem to compress just fine, once!

Psperl, That is exactly what happened to my motor last summer. Have a picture of the engine block with a hole in to remember it by. I was under the same impression about the core as well bu was recently told that if the engine pops from the inside out it is accepted as a core if it pops from the outside in then no core (ie you hit something). I would doublecheck...

Did you notice smoke first as a sign.... or did it just go with no warning?

yes, on my dime, and I just bought the car a month ago. Supposedly there is an implied warranty in MA, but the dealer won't honor it, so a long court battle may be looming.

I noticed smoke at about the time I felt a loss in power. Some people behind me noticed me smoking, but I am not certain hwo te timeframes match up.

Reg says '99, but Porsche says '98 996. A VERY early model.
