Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just purchased a aluminum shifter for my newly purchased 996. How difficult is it for someone with limited DIY skills to swap out the shift *****? Any place I can look for directions or a reference? Thanks......

POST 2Original post

First unsnap the leather boot, then pull the leather all the way up over the shift ****. Next grab the **** with both hands, secure yourself and pull up till it pops off.BTW, you have to yank it really hard. I have read that some have a screw, mine didn't. Just yank it off, put the new one in place. hit the top of the **** with your fist till it snaps into place and snap the leather boot back in place. Really easy, no matter your DIY skills , good luck

Watch your nogin..It has been said that there have been a few that have almost knocked them selfs off. Yank hard but not that hard

Almost sounds like the sex manual for your wife ;-)

POST 5Original post

It's not that hard, and my mechanical skills are somewhat limited - don't be put off. Shops will charge several c notes to do so its worth doing yourself. Be organized and have the right tools. You will need the various torx drives and a rubber mallet. Set aside 2 hours of free time in a well-lit are and keep the parts organized. Once you install the short shift, work it through the gears several times before re-installing the various trim parts to make sure it is seated properly. Good feeling of accomplishment once done.

I do not think he has the SSK, I think it is just the shift ****.
