No p-car for me yet but I'm doing my research. It will be a toss up between this, a 335i or an E46 M3 (M3 probably being the third choice right now). I've read about the possible engine and transmission failures but how common are non-drivetrain failures. Are there a lot of electronic gizmos that can go wrong that would be spendy to repair? thx

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I don't think transmission failures are common at all. From what I can tell, the limited electronics in a 996 do not fail normally and I can't think of anything besides engines failing that come up regularly other than coolant expansion tank replacements. If I was looking at a warranty I would opt for drivetrain only with a hefty co-pay if it was a lot cheaper.
I've been thinking about this more and more and would like to look into a drivetrain warranty if it includes the internal seals. Anyone know a good company I can speak to?
I have had good experience with Smart Auto Warranty, bought through Carchex. I recently had the shift arm seal replaced on my Boxter S gearbox and there were no issues with them paying.
