there have been other threads on this, but this is the simplest explanation in layman's terms i've seen: http://radian.org/notebook/porsche

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Sweet. I finally understand short-selling, and why I will never try it.
Thanks for that... now I can understand w/o having to ask my wife to explain...
Porsche has always done a great job of squeezing money out of people.
Good explanation - especially if an engineer can understand it!
Wow, interesting and current news. I had thought it was clear that Porsche had been accumulating VW stock all along, but I guess 75% was a shocker. It also seems like the "borrowing" of limitless amounts of shares to support short-selling would be regulated; well, maybe that's coming. Imagine once being the 94th richest guy in the world, and then throwing yourself under a train.
I didn't realize the connection to Porsche - very sneeky!

Im sure there's more to this than the takeover... it may arise and it may not, especially with all the sh*t going on today.
One thing about this story doesn't make sense (although it is an interesting story). Until recently it wasn't possible for companies to own that much VW stock, so the claim of Porsche owning 75% of VW stock sounds incorrect - remember the Lower Saxony ownership clause that stopped companies/individuals owning over 30% of VW? Porsche owning 75% of VW would have been huge news and I've never heard of it. It is only recently that Porsche has moved up to 50% of VW ownership.
good read...one thing to always remember, we (the public) never really knows the whole story....
Reasons I've never liked or understood why people buy into hedge funds. I've always considered the markets enough of a gamble, I'm certainly not going to start 'betting' on stocks.

Their latest public announcement was moving up to a 50.76% stake.

Mac, Didn't that apply to only non-German companies? Or am I confused?

My understanding was that it applied to all companies and was part of preserving the controlling stake of Lower Saxony.
