What's with that bit of plastic down at the oily end of the dip stick wire? After letting the car sit overnight I get in, turn on the ignition, wait the 5 seconds to get the graphic *oil level* read-out I'm about 400 cl low. So I pop the motor deck, pull the stick, take it to where the sun is shining bright and , yep, the plastic thing has oil above the little hole... Well whoopie! Thing is, an automobile that has as many oil lights, gauges, warnings, etc, as the 911 could have a dip stick that actually had stamped markings showing oil level. Is that too much to ask? All I got is a little green thingy....

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Unless I'm mistaken, the manual says oil readings should be taken when the engine is at operating temps (i.e. driven until temp reach 180, stop engine, turn key fob and activate oil reading).
The markings of Min. and Max on the oil dipstick are the cut out points on the plastic piece you are complaining about.
bet: *The markings of Min. and Max on the oil dipstick are the cut out points on the plastic piece you are complaining about.* I read the owner's manual, and yes, there they are but then they're less than a centemeter apart, and I'm not complaining, I'm *carping*.
Ok "carping" Maybe the cut out points are different on the ROW cars then, because on my dipstick the cut out points are approximately 3 centimeters apart.
gravedgr: *Unless I'm mistaken, the manual says oil readings should be taken when the engine is at operating temps (i.e. driven until temp reach 180, stop engine, turn key fob and activate oil reading).* My digital gauge tells me *I* have to wait 54 minutes (then starts to count down) for a reading. Who has time for that? Are P-Cars so really different that a cold engine dip stick pull shouldn't show an accurate oil level?
Readings cold versus hot are equivalent. When the car was new, and we all know what we do with new toys , I tried hot, cold, tepid, with the dip stick, with the electronic, dipstick freshly out, dipstick wiped and rechecked.............. Hot or cold, so long as the car is on a flat surface and all the oil has drained, the readings are the same. For anyone interested, tepid (engine has run for less than 5 minutes), will show a bar less than the real level. Oil is still sluggish, tepid engine confuses the countdown, and it takes longer than the countdown to completely drain.
