Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sometimes when I am in slow long hot traffic I will occasionally get a loud whine when starting off. I cant say if its slipping since I have never heard this loud of a noise. Like a whine or whistle. Not all the time but more noticable when starting off after a lot of stop and go traffic.

POST 2Original post

Might be the throwout bearing (release bearing) going bad.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That sounds bad and expensive! Did it happen to you?

POST 4Original post

its not THAT bad and not expensive but requires removing the transmission to replace, if I was going that far I would swap the clutch and a few other parts out while I was in there so you dont have to go back for a LONG time!!

POST 6Original post

what was the outcome of this issue? i have a 02 996 c2 cabrio that does the same thing. was this fixed? if so, what was done and costs? Makes a whine/chirp sound from mid to back end of car. Only on hot day excelerating from a stop in first gear when clutch is releasing. Especially when excelerating from a stop on an incline. Thanks!

POST 9Original post

Yes, I know its an old tread but I'm a new member with this exact issue and this was the only thread I found that matched my same issue. I was checking to see if this was resolved and if so, what was the fix. Throwout (Release) bearing?
