I've been interested primarily in 993s, but I came across this 996 that looked pretty sharp. http://www.611autofind.com/used_vehi...e4fbe01&bhcp=1 Any thoughts? Also, how common are engine failures after 2000? Any major "gotchas" that are prevalent on this model year. Does the top incur problems? Thanks, Oliver

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Why would you consider a 996? Everyone knows its not a Real Porsche. Keep looking at 993s!
I was looking for a 993 when I found my 996. That was 5 years ago. It's been great. 993s are great cars too, but 996s overall, are more modern, comfortable, inexpensive to maintain, but alas, depreciation sucks. Good for you though. a 2000 996 in great shape is worth less than a similar 993. Supply and demand? Go figure.

thats a ridiculous statement. The 993 cabs look silly, a top end rebuild is expensive, and the newest one is 10 years old. Plus, they are still quite expensive.
do you like it? PPI and get them to go for a price you want.... why not. 2002 and up are fine.

Apparently, you weren't around for the dozen or so pages (in a few threads) about how the 996 was a POS, would catch fire, wasn't a real Porsche (water cooled), engines grenade, etc. etc. The original comment was a reference to all of that. It's an ongoing joke here on the 996 side. I.e., 996 owners saying that their own 996's aren't real Porsches... -td

im aware of the stigma the 996 has on here, especially on the 993 forum. It didn't seem like our air-cooled friend was joking around, but in hindsight, he probably was.
That price seems (way) too high in this market. That advertising prose is a bit cheesey too.
+1 with Meister. Price seems pretty high in this economic climate, and a now aging car. I'm sure you could do much better on price. The car, from the pics, looks nicely kept. If you like it insist on PPI, drive it if possible, and do some serious price negotiation, or find one already more reasonably priced, there are alot out there. GL. Oh and there a few rennlisters selling their vehicles. Re: engine problems, yep they did/do occur after 2000, so ask if engine has already been replaced or buy one from a dealer with CPO and sleep soundly at night if that is a concern for you.
completely agree. what would you consider a reasonable price? 38?
Yep, Only a noob would take that bait. I'm just sayin.
"Too good to be true". Don't take the bait.

My rule of thumb is start low. $38K, IMHO, is low to fair. You can mention things like, the car lacks Litronics/Xenons, and bargain hard. Looks like a nice car, though. Don't say I said that .

Ooops!! Wrong thread, sorry!
btw, you guys should tell some of your friends in the classified about the trend in 996 prices
I would probably look for a 50K mile TT, spend an extra $4-8K, and drop the hammer! Rotor
looking for a vert primarily. Im coming from an 850bhp mustang cobra, so I won't be impressed by the acceleration of a factory 996 turbo.

Fair enough...and what about the resale on the TT vs. a C2 Cab in 5 years?
Quotes source post: 5451962
probably both bad. Don't plan to own it for 5 years though.
