I absolutely love the sound of my C4 engine but don't know what I am hearing exactly. If someone wouldn't mind explaining what are the mechanical parts that are making that engine sing I'd appreciate it. I hope this question makes sense.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 cylinders horizontally opposed
I am interested in knowing what engine parts are the major contributors in producing the sounds made. What are the parts I am hearing when the engine is accelerating or idling for that matter.
Geez Louise!! The sound of a high performance German engineered horizontally opposed flat six that is incredibly brilliant in design, performance and endurance! What you hear, and experience, really cannot be described...it becomes a siren song and part of your soul. My two cents! HA!! Just drive it and love all the sounds it makes...

You are hearing the combined sounds of fuel injectors, spark, and mixture being burned or exhausted. There is the noise of the idler roller bearings, some accessory drive bearings, the noise of the cam chains and their respective sprockets, the oil pump, power steering pump. In short everything in the engine that moves back and forth, rotates, opens and closes, turns on and off, sparks, makes a noise that adds to the overall din you hear.

It's your worn motor and transmission mounts with 6k miles on them, connected to the water pump that has distributed it's plastic fins to the far reaches of your cooling passages never to be seen again since it was not replaced at 10k miles preventatively, connected to the engine straining not to explode on the 2.25 gallons of oil you neglected in there for longer than 365 days despite only traveling 600 miles, connected to the IMS bearing jumping to ludacris speed over 2500 rpm and creating new end cap tolerances for free, connected to the mufflers you should have Gundo hacked with your buddies harbor freight welder as your first foray into the wide world of welding in his driveway... something like that.
Thanks Macster!
