I was reading one of the new car mags and they stated that the new Aston Martin V8 will have a 385 hp 4.3 L V8. This car was originally supposed to have in the 325 hp range with a 3200 lb. weight. Apparently they saw the writing on the wall, and realized that they had to be proactive with this car. I wish Porsche would do the same thing. 340 hp flat 6 (and even worse conrresponding weight increase) sounds farther & farther from being competitive. Either give me a car 200 lbs. lighter (highly unlikely) or a car that has 350-360 hp. I will pay for like or better (than the Vette, M3, AMG SLK, etc) performance but not substantially worse.

And it looks great, too! (not a very good pic, tho )
Don, is that the DB7 Zagato ? The front grill looks too big to be the new AM V8. And it is not supposed to be until MY 2005.
here is an article on the new amv8: http://www.auto123.com/en/info/news/...spy?artid=9470 and here is a pic:
The front of the car looks like a whale, it should be sucking up plankton. God that's ugly.
I like whales... Here is a front shoot... It will come down to how it feels and handle in the real world.
I got invited to tour 2 of the sites (Gaydon and Newport Pagnell) last fall and was "told" 380 would be about the figure they were expecting from the V8. Don't want to go too far up the power scale too soon, as A-M will want to add more power variants later. It looks biggish in pictures but is tiny, smaller than a 996, in real life. Don's shot is of the DB7 Zagato coupe or the cab version which can look ugly in pictures but certainly doesn't in the flesh. They had a couple at Newport Pagnell along with a previous generations of Zagato. The DB4 Zagato is just BEAUTIFUL! The new DB9 - a bit out of the price range admittedly - is also a stunningly beautiful, svelte, car that seems lean and above all much better made than the DB7. A-M are apparently already taking orders from existing customers for the V8...
Nice, but for $170,000? Forget it.
The AMV8 is one of the most beautiful designs I've ever seen. But 170K is a lot for a car that targets the 996TT. As much as I love the AMV8, I think I'd take a TTX50 with lots of toys and money left over.
I think people who like the style of the AM would also like the Maserati, and the M has more HP (390) and is cheaper ($110,000).
I believe the price of AMV8 of $170K is Canadian. Supposedly about 100-110K US. Here's another link: http://www.edmunds.com/news/autoshow...2/page049.html
There's no way I take the Ashton over a TT, not a chance...
too bad the Maserati is nothing but cheap quality now that ford owns them, my local P dealer has a few new ones and you can see the fenders gaps are diffrent here and there, not to mention it doesn't have a Manuel trans option, TTX50 for sure is the better car of all of these mentioned
The new AMV8 will be $100K range. It is meant to compete with the 911. The DB9 will be in the $150K range and will be the competitor of the 911 TT. The question is AMV8 or 911 (not TT)
Maserati is owned by Ford????? I thought they were affiliated with Ferrari and FIAT....
Maserati is owned by Ferrari.
i thought aston martin was owned by ferrari, since they have the same engine's and so forth
I know the Maserati has a V8 designed by Ferrari. Aston Martin, along with Jaguar is owned by Ford. I think I would rather have the AMV8 vs. the Maserati as it is supposed to come in the 3200 lb. area where as the Maserati is in the 3800 lbs. range. That is as heavy as a 911 TT Cab.
That's less than the $170m quoted above. I was "told" that the aim was to come in pricewise between a fully spec'd C4S and a basic Turbo. Remember Ulrich Bez who is now chairman for Aston Martin worked for a number of years in a senior position at Porsche. He will know for sure how to compete against Porsche...
Ford does not own Maserati. He meant the Aston Martin
I went and re-read your quote. Ford does not own Maserati. They do own Jag and Aston Marin as you mentioned later. FYI... that's the best thing that ever happened to either company. Neither would exist today otherwise. Jaguar's quality actually went up 100 fold once Ford get a hold of them.
Not true. They are entirely seperate companies with little in common. Aston-Martin's engines are eithe derivatives of ford or Jaguar engines. Maserati's engine is a derivative of the engine in the Ferrari 360. Ford own Aston Martin, and FIAT/GM owns Ferrari/Maserati
Maserati offers both a standard stick-shift and also the "Cambiacorsa" paddle-shift. Neither has a torque converter so can't be called and automatic
gosh, it seems all of the automakers own everyone else, but after looking at the Maserati at the local dealership it still looks like the outside shell was poorly put together with all the gaps and such, and not to mention the back of it looks like a honda prelude, the interior however was very nice
"too bad the Maserati is nothing but cheap quality now that ford owns them" Maserati is a subsidiary of Ferrari, which in turn is owned by Fiat SpA, not Fiat Auto. At least in '02, the Maseratis were sold with a 6 speed option, and I suspect they still are.
"FIAT/GM owns Ferrari/Maserati" GM invested in Fiat Auto, which is owned by Fiat SpA, which also owns Ferrari. GM has no investment in Ferrari.
