I met my wife at a party tonight, she drove our '01 C2 cab, I drove our Passat. I followed her home after the party, and the brake lights weren't working. They would flicker on every once in a while, but other than the flicker, don't work. I am assuming it's a bad brake switch. Is it easy to get to, and is it easy to switch out? Johnny

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

maybe she is really good on downshifting....... should be SS 996.613.113.02 (or close to it) - item 17 or 18... I forgot to look exactly but they are simillar swapping is a twist out - unplug and reverse for instalation cost ~$15 IIRC I have not done this, but did some work under there, most things are fairly simple to access and maybe someone has done this exact job will have more accurate info... GL
Ha, Ha, Ha - That is exactly what I was thinking - Is she downshifting and not using the brakes??? It is a tip though. Thanks for the info, I am going to get upside down and pull this switch. I should have it done in an hour or so. Johnny
Hi all, My Boxster S has developed this issue too - I brake and there is a teeny bit of a flicker but no brake lights come on. Bulbs are fine. Did replacing this switch part fix the problem?
Ooops, I forgot to reply to everyone. I replied to Ed via private message instead. If you have a flickering brake light, but no steady brakelights, it's the switch. After replacing, everything worked normal. I'm 6'2" tall, but I was able to get under there and replace it. It is a bit of a pain though, and took me about 45 minutes, mainly because I couldn't get the switch out. The part was $23.00 from the local dealer here in Seattle. It is the part # above. If you can, remove the switch before you get the part. There are 2 different cap colors, and the parts guy needs to know what color the cap is on the switch. I tried a bunch of different wrenches and pliers (very time consuming), but I found that a simple pair of needle nose pliers worked best. The switch just needs to be turned 1/4 turn and it pops out. I removed the wiring harness first, and that seemed to help as well. Best of luck, like I said, it took me about 45 minutes to do, but if I did it again, it would probably be 5 - 10 minutes. Tools you need : Flashlight, needlenose pliers. That's it. Johnny PS: 1 you don't need to unhook the battery 2 : the plunger on the switch "ratchets out and in. Make sure you pull the plunger out all the way, otherwise it may not contact the brake peddle properly
