anyone know how I can tell if I ahve the "sport" exhaust (just picked up the car and it needs the right mufler replaced - the indy is telling me it's sport - $1100, vs. regular $500) thanks!

Do you have the option codes for the car? Part number off the muffler?
yes....we'd need the part number or a picture of the muffler. In any event, people are getting both 3.6 mufflers here with low mileage for 150 bucks or so. If it's PSE, you can post a want ad, and you just might get a nice one for a fraction of the cost. Good luck, J p.s....welcome aboard! Let's see some pix of your car!!!!
I'll get you the p/n of the mufler (on my slip they only wrote "special order") thanks for the kind welcome - can you clue me in on posting a pic? I've got a crappy one from the website of the dealer for starters. Damn it's good to be back in a Porsche!
OK - mufler p/n is 996 111 985 04
Just look at the mufflers. There is a pipe that conects the top inlet pipe with the bottom outlet pipe. Sort of a bypass pipe. If you have the two pipes connected they are a sport PSE model.
your options codes are on a white sticker (usually wrinkled up) under the center of the hood. J
if you have the factory sport exhaust wouldn't you have the exhaust botton on the horseshoe consule. that would be the easiest way to find out.

sorry - I don't know what you mean?
There would be a button on the horseshoe trim in the center of the dash that would activate the bypass on the butterfly valve. Mufflers look different as well, and have a bypass valve. The part number is in the Tequipment catalog so it probably is a sport muffler. Retail is about 1086.00, but I would call Sunset Imports in Oregon and do the replacement yourself (or look for a used one). See the pics at this link. http://www.carnewal-europe.com/main.htm
Sport Exhaust mufflers have a butterfly valve and a second pipe that comes out of the top of the muffler. Regular mufflers do not have this top pipe. You can see this pipe by looking at the muffler from underneath it.

Or in your service book. There's a copy of the sticker on a page in there, too.
$1086 is exactly what I was charged - I'll have a look when I leave work, and also at the options list.
996 111 985 04 is a sport exhaust muffler.
I find it odd that this needs replacing, what are your symptoms and which side? AA

that's exactly what I thought, as well as the indy - esp at 35K miles it was rattling, etc., they took it off and a bunck of little parts come out of the mufler - right (passenger) side
Quotes source post: 5259098
My passenger side PSE failed also, at less than 25k miles. Interior rattles, and bad ones at that. But only when under pressure. We took the can off the car, shook it around, no rattles. Put it back on the car, fired it up, 2 minutes later, huge racket. Probably failed welds allow a baffle to move when hot.

That is exactly the same side and problem I am experiencing with my PSE. VERY disappointing for a supposed "upgraded" part on the car. I only hear my rattle when going over cobbled stone driveways or the dots in the road so I have been living with it. Not worth the $1K to fix it right now. Leave it to Porsche to charge the same for 1/2 the exhaust as a full aftermarket exhaust. Lame.

that's bizarre - just the opposite with mine, loud when cold, less so when warm. oh well, I bit the bullet and the new one's in, now just to pick it up and get it installed
pissed, since it appears that you paid for both mufflers, you better make sure both are on the vehicle. If you have an extra good one there will always be a fellow rennlister who will gladly take it off your hands and you can offset your cost of the new ones. A win-win.

was under the impression that my $1086 was for one side only - not a pair???

That's right, only one, but that is dealer retail.
