I took my car to a shop for what I thought was a failing water pump. I have a constant ticking noise accompanied by a chirping noise that gets louder and faster as the revs rise. It only seems to happen after the car is warmed up. The sound is coming from the lower left side of the engine (same area as the water pump). The shop just called to say that they removed the serpentine belt but the sound is STILL there. What the #%@$ would make this noise when nothing but the crankshaft is spinning?? Exhaust leak maybe?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

valve ticking?
The ticking is pretty subtle and may or may not be part of the problem. I am more concerned about the chirping - almost like a bad belt or bearing - which is loud and irritating.
