My friend's '99 996 coupe's brake pedal returns slowly after the foot is off the pedal. It takes like half a second to return completely and it's very noticeable. The brake fluid may need changing but does it indicate something wrong in the brake master cylinder? Any help will be appreciated! Thanks, - Ahsai

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I remember being told of this symptom when the importance of regularly bleeding the fluid was explained to me. I think the "spongy-ness" you're noticing is the result of moisture build up in the fluid, or expired old brake fluid. Do you know when it was last flushed? I've also heard, unfortunately, that once it's allowed to get to the stage you are describing...a more major process is required to rectify. Regular bleeding attempts might not work any longer, if the fluid has become gel. Certainly worth trying a flush first though. Please keep us posted on results...
Thanks for the info. That's what I'm afraid of. We'll try to flush the brake system first and go from there. BTW, the car is worse than yesterday. The brake seems to activate by itself whenever I press on the brake pedal. It feels like the vacuum is sucking in the brake pedal and the pedal would not even come up! It's so bad that I had to pull it up with my toes. - Ahsai
