Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

From the factory NONE of the manual transmission 996 cars will start without depressing the clutch (although I am not sure when the car is out of gear now that I think about it...hmmm). However the microswitch on the clutch pedal can be modified to fool/defeat the system.
Won't start in neutral either without the clutch pressed to the floor. I believe in Europe, tho, that the 996 does not require the clutch pedal pressed to start.
I modded my 2000 with a zip tie around the clutch microswitch so I did not have to press the clutch pedal to start it (although by force of habit I almost always do). This does not affect the cruise control. Read about it here or on REnntech.org, I forgot which.
