Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just looked over 911 & PorscheWorld "911 Special" article and it answers the question... "why we hear so many issues with M96 motors?" _150,000 996'ers built _(in 7 years) - verses 66,000 993's - 53,000 964's - 81,000 Carrera 3.2's (all in 14 years). Add in the 200,000 (just up to 2006) Boxsters ...and you have M96 WaterPumper engines - Likely out numbering or close to - ALL the Air cooled motors ever built. (just N/A Street 911s, not Turbo racers etc.) So when you compare ANY prior 911 series to the 996 on any issue the Numbers are going to be large. We could assume the number of early Clutch and Break replacements in 996 & Boxster is Twice the rate of Air Cooled cars... and so what! Double the issues if you build an All New engine and sell more in the first 10 years then all 911's in 30 years??? And about those low Prices for 996? What if it was just supply and demand - and has nothing to do with Internet chatter??? All I know for sure is I am a real happy 996er...

+ Not many people had Internet in the early 90's and in the 80's only a few guys in a garage who's sole interest was hacking NASA until one of them turned and decided to build PC's or somit?. So in this modern world of communication of course we get to find out all the gremlins.

POST 5Original post

You take the good with the bad in these days of instant communications, Rennlist and all it's predecessors have enabled me to work on my own cars, solve problems that I may never have diagnosed on my own and generally be part of the great Porsche community... On the bad side, you get to hear every damn possible issue that can come up.... And of course it's not just Porsche, on my old Audi S4 that I had years ago the Audi forums were all about the K03 turbos blowing up, many had the problem but my Stage II car never did...

POST 6Original post

If Porsche had built 150k 968s owners would be terrified to buy them, fearing the dreaded pinion bearing failure and cam tensioner nightmares. That said, when you know a couple of people that have put new engines in a Boxster or 996 at their own expense these numbers provide merely cold comfort.

POST 7Original post

Fear is a great motivator, my 996 is a keeper.

POST 8Original post

Mine's a keeper....you do what needs to be done to satisfy your own level of comfort. And there are plenty who will attest to how great these babies really are! Drive on!

POST 9Original post

well look at it this way ......... Eventually I will have to do the clutch anyway.... once I am in there I might as well do IMS and AOS as preventative maintenance. If I keep the car another 5 years after that, the cost is cheap compared to depreciation on a newer model But for now I;m driving and enjoying and not going to worry about that ...
