Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, $350 for one plastic rod and one metal rod with a sleeve ... what a piece of garbage. I have bought, used, and liked Baum Tools before but this one is absolute garbage. Don't buy it until they fix it. 1) the tip of the plastic wrist pin / piston alignment tool is slightly too big and needed to be put on a lathe and turned down by 0.5mm to make it fit good enough for use. 2) the metal end sleeve where you are supposed to load up the wrist-pin clip is just a little too big for its own good. 2.a) On cylinders 5 and 6, if you wiggle it up and down with your hand, you "may" be able to insert the end sleeve all the way home and then slide hammer the loaded clip in its place. 2.b) On cylinder 4, the end sleeve fits with zero clearance into the access hole at the case. There is no room to wiggle up or down and the tool cannot be inserted all the way home. I ended up rounding out the end of the sleeve to help it slide into the piston hole. 2c) But, when you are done with cylinder number 4, the end sleeve fit so tight in the hole that there is no easy way to get it back out (and it must come out). The three cylinders that are difficult are 4/5/6 and I misfired on two of the three. I was able to retrieve the circlips without having to split the case but what a pain. I am not sure if the $$$uber expensive Faultless Tool from Flat Six is worth the money but I am very sure the Baum Tool one is garbage. If someone has a better solution, please point the way.

POST 2Original post

Thanks for the review. Sounds like the same issues (or fewer) that have been noted on the eBay tools. Aside from the uber expensive faultless stuff, it sounds as if they all require modification to get to work acceptable.

POST 3Original post

I have heard these complaints before.....quality control sucks....they need to be remachined before use...( I made my own a long time ago )

POST 4Original post

Yelcap, did you have the block sleeved with LN nickies?

Yes, to 3.8L spec. It costs a pretty penny.
