Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a car that I'm thinking of buying, 2001 convertible. The owner (an acquaintance) was kind enough to let me keep it for a few days to get things checked out. It's missing the owner's manual and I'm too embarrassed to tell him I don't know how to work the top. I have the two rear bolts loose on the hard top and the center latch above the windshield. The rear of the hard top is loose but the front won't budge. Do I need to remove the four 4mm allen bolts at either end of the windshield too? Is that all? Where is the soft top control? Ignition on or off? Sorry to be so dense but that's the way it is sometimes. Thanks.

To put the soft top up, Pull the emergency up Push the top button, right center of dash, until it is all of the way up and latched. The top warning light will go out when it is fully latched. Do this with the engine running or you will be torturing the battery.

I removed mine yesterday. I have a hand crank on the wall and a large eye bolt in the ceiling which holds a cradle for the hard top. I removed my top in 5 mins. You need two strong people to lift the top off if you don't have the hoist. The hard top weighs in at 60lbs. You need to release the Allen key bolts in the back window. Then the center cover at the front inside the car. Then pull the red tab and its ready to lift. Lift backwards and up. The hoist locks in place and holds the top up to the ceiling until I need to lower it onto the car again at the end of the year. You can lower and raise the convertible part via the toggle switch on the dash. OR via the key in the drivers door. Hold the key left and the top goes down. Hold right, the top goes up. I find the key in the lock great on hot days when returning to the car. I don't suffocate inside the car using the down button on the dash.
