Bought a 996.1 recently and had a thorough inspection by a Porsche mechanic. At one point he took out the ashtray to study the plastic in better light and he said he had never seen that kind of interior color before. Is it not the same as in other 996s? It is sort of dark greyish.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Your car must be a 99. This plastic is very durable and desirable. After that, Porsche went with an improved painted plastic that in fact wears badly and looks crappy on most cars without a repaint.
Yes, it is a '98. That is good to hear, a part of me was a bit worried I had a even less fancy plastic than what was normal on 911s back then
I'd be more concerned that your mechanic has never seen an early 996 before :v
Early build trim Look at the build sticker for the interior/trim colors codes. My 996 is an early build (2/98) with C/D: Graphite Grey with Dark Natural Grey trim It definitely wears better than the painted trim
