Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I would offer anybody who is interested to have this issue resolved to contact PCNA directly and request them to create a program to swap out old m96/m97 engine from any 996 or 997.1 car and replace it with new 9a1 motor. all they have to do for that is to alter new siemens ECU to work with older bus/sensors. should be a piece of cake thing to do. i would not mind to pay $20K-$30K to get that done on my car. it is really an idiotic situation when they do know of all issues in m96/m97 motor and when it blows they give you same one again. it really sucks and they can easily do better if they will be forced to do so. M96 has a long list of issues. there is a solution for most if not all those issues - a 9a1 motor. It has to be possible to do as engine mounts and all critical dimensions are practically all the same. Regards, Paul.

even if it will end with nothing i think it is still worth rasing this concern to this corporation. i hate current situation and do not want to spend $120K more on a new car. and it applies even more to all 996 car owners than to 997.1 car`s owners. situation with m96/m97 could not even remotely exist with any other big house like toyota/honda. I do not understand why same rules cannot be enforced with Porsche.

POST 3Original post

Since you are open to paying $40k then why not just transplant the critical components such as alarm, dme, immobilizer, instrument cluster, wiring loom, sensors, etc.?

POST 4Original post

Here is one such engine for sale $15k. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/320631686430 Perhaps another 15k-20k for the wiring, instrument cluster, dme, sensors, alarm, etc. and you are all set!

POST 5Original post

I don't see the cost/benefit working out. For that money + the value of your current car you are talking the price of a nice 996TT, 996 GT3, or perhaps a 997.2 car.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

it is not a question of what i personally can or cannot afford. it is a question of if there is anything a corporation/manufacturer can offer as an incentive to current owners to help with a known problem. but as i see it looks like most owners do not think their blown engine a reason enough to write an email to PCNA - well, no reason to bether then. like i said, i can afford to fix my car in the way i want it, so if no one beleives it is worth an effort to have an assistaqnce from a manufacturer - there is no reason to bother. keep going through multiple m96 engines and keep loosing them one after another if that is how it should be... sometimes people really do amuse me but i guess that is how world works.

POST 7Original post

for $10k may be, above that it is not really worth it for the 996 owners. But you are right about Porsche not living up to the bigger manufacturer standards. I often wonder what pushed Toyota to act, as it seems so hard to get anything out of them via the legal route anyways... Seems like it make more sense for them to pay the legal fee and wait.. May be someday a specialized class action lawyer will buy a 996 and blow its engine.. never know For me the simple solution would be for Porsche to offer an overhaul package, let's say $5k for an engine swap. I am sure only a few dozen people would elect for the procedure and the forum chatter will transform in praise for the brand.. Cheap marketing if you ask me ... They certainly spend that much everyday on twizzer and faceburk promotion !

POST 8Original post

There are quite a few stores of Dr. Porsche meeting owners half way on re-manned engines, but yes the Internet does seem to make the whole thing a sort of "epidemic" when really, who has the actual figures for reliability and replacements (rhetorical)?

Oh brother. 1. Porsche won't admit there is a problem. Agreeing to such a swap would seem to go against their position that nothing is wrong. There is no way in hell you would get any manufacturer to agree to such a plan - creating hybrid Frankensteins out of out-of-warranty cars? Not gonna happen. 2. At this stage many/most/lots of 996 owners did not buy their cars directly from a dealership, either new or used. Porsche is not interested in your problems if you did not buy the car from them. 3. Much simpler and less expensive solutions are already available (pre-disaster of course): LN Engineering's IMS upgrade and the new IMS Guardian. It is not that we do not care, or we can't be bothered... it is that your suggestion is a non-starter.
