I have a 2002 996 Targa with a rattle. Yeah I know so what else is new this is a targa but this is a really dramatic rattle and sounds at times like it is coming from the side windows and at times like it is coming from the roof pillars. Considered trying to get the trim off of the roof pillars but not sure how to do that but I feel like there is likely some form of rod or chord that is jumping around in there. Any advice appreciated

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

On my 2003, the bolts were loose (and two were in fact missing!) on my roof that were causing an awful rattle. Much worse than anything I found online, and in a similar location as you describe. When I hit a bump there was a sound/sensation that the roof was lifting up and slamming back down. It drove me bonkers but the fix was almost embarrassingly easy. I just did this job a few weeks ago so it is somewhat fresh in my memory: For this you must remove the fabric cover that you see when the roof is closed. Towards the rear of the trim there is one small torx screw that you must remove. Once removed that plastic piece can be gently pried out/down. It is clipped to the roof in a couple spots and will come undone with a trim removal tool or thin screw driver. Let that piece hang by the fabric bit and you will see four allen bolts and I think two torx screws. The torx hold the glass to the frame and the allen bolts the frame to the slide mechanism. Check and see if they're loose, and if so simply tighten them up. If you need pictures let me know.
