Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, I am curious why the air box for 996 has some perforation on the bottom? It is definitely not for draining water. The perforation will allow the heat from the engine bay to get into the air box. As far as I know warm/hot air is not good for making power. The cooler the air coming in, the denser the air, the more power the engine will make. Any ill effects closing those perforations?

Those are all about sound/acoustics and the manipulation of them.....there is usually a membrane also that lets sound out but not let air/heat in ... All high end MFG's play with Acoustics to eliminate unwanted tones, and to enhance preceived desirable tones...

So in your esteemed opinion, closing the perforated holes on the bottom will or will not choke the air going to engine at WOT. I have a 4.1L Slakker rebuild engine with 82mm GT3 throttle body. I noticed that closing the perforated holes makes the air intake quieter (a tiny bit)

It will make it quieter, but really sucking a bit of warm air in at idle is not going to do too much for dropping performance by a significant amount. Half the reason open airbox's (in the engine bay) don't do well on dynos is that the car doesn't have full air flow going around it which helps suck the air out of the engine bay. The noise of a more open airbox is way cooler anyway, and if the power increase is minimal i'll still prefer that to a quiet one

Correct ....Closing off the perforation holes in the Air Box will not have an effect on the Total Air Flow at WOT of the engine, just the "sound" ...IF you want "Proof Positive" for your self you can easily record your MAF MAX kg/h both before and after and compare with a simple $20 Dongle and Phone App...as what has been covered here in this Thread ... https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...potential.html
