Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2006 Porsche Cayman S - auto parts - by owner - vehicle automotive... (craigslist.org) I was just reflecting yesterday how my roller find here in Hawaii was a once in a lifetime gift...Have motor, but will it work?

POST 3Original post

Well it is a new year. Tell the wife its for her.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

She wants an auto and hates red... I'd really have to do some financial finagling as I'm about to finish paying for the R40. But if this thing sits on the market long enough, I might have to consider it. Bet I could flip it, but would rather be a hoarder.

POST 7Original post

If it was white you would have already bought it!

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17132605

That worked the first time, not sure if I could pull it off again. Yes, white would be bought!

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17132793

Yes, but once you start to ad $$$ up, I might as well buy one running.

POST 11Original post

Watch out. once you go mid-engine you never go back.....or something like that..R40 gonna be something special!!!

POST 12Original post

Well, even if it was running in good condition it would get you upside down at $14,000.

POST 13Original post

If that were anywhere near Michigan it would be in my barn and my wife would be making me sleep out there. I would love to have a Cayman and I like Red. Sigh.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 17132836

Once you go R40 you never go back. Of course Im just assuming.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17133248

Or a Cayman with an R40?

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 17133291

Buy the Cayman, and I'll help you fix the engine yourself :-)

POST 17Original post

Certified FSI associate on Kauai, comin' up... ? Echoing, yes, buy the Cayman. You've already been through the learning curve on the 996 and this doesn't scare you. "Harder" jobs simply become 'get me the right tool' jobs.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 17133916

I've got two more people on the big island that want engines. I wish we could find the right installer to start the Certification process with.

What else are you going to do with your spare motor? DO IT! (Then send the broken motor back to Flat-Six for another R40!)

POST 20Original post

How much is shipping between Kona and Lihue? Might have to flat bed it to Hilo which is about 1.5 hours from Waikoloa. Sort of unrelated story. My dad bought a boat in Kona when I was 18 and we were towing it back to Hilo in my Scout. U-bolt on the trailer broke and we ended up in a ditch on the side of the road a few miles north of Kona. If this had happened south of Kona where there are steep cliffs we'd probably be dead. Scout was totaled and $8-$10K damage to the boat. Oh, and my mom was following behind us watching the whole thing. A few minutes later a guy from a contracting company pulled over (Isemoto I think) and said they had a crane at a site a few miles away. They were able to get the boat & truck on a flatbed and transported back to Hilo for us. I think the total cost to my dad for that was $2,500.00 (30 years ago). My dad spent several months fixing and upgrading his new (to him) boat and he eventually got me a new (to me) Scout at the local power company auction. I had it painted almost the same color my 996 is now.

It could ship from Kawaihai. The car is right down the road in Puako.

POST 22Original post

Does it at least move? If you are able to at least move it around your property under its own power, that’s a big plus.

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17134375

Yes, it's a roller. Possible IMSB failure.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 17134402

It's an 06 so should be the LARGE IMSB.. I missed out on Caymen a couple years ago for cheap that was still running, the owner said it started suddenly smoking so he stopped driving and put it up for sale..lol

POST 25Original post

If you want to collab on this project, let me know. I can buy the car and we can both work on it with Jake's help. PM me if you want to explore this idea. I'm always up for trying something new.

POST 26Original post

Maybe I can lend a hand. I've made worse decisions on Kauai. Last time there I got a tattoo that said "Hey brotha" to settle up a Superbowl bet.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 17134822

I'd throw a few ducats at this project as well.

POST 29Original post

It seems everyone is taking the side of the little devil on your shoulder.(no surprise) Where do you have this question posted so you can get all responses from the angel on your other shoulder? Or maybe I have it backwards, these are all the responses from the angel on your shoulder...

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17135913

My wife's on the other shoulder...

POST 31Original post

I know that you sometimes have to jump on something when it shows up...but if it were me I'd likely pass. In a couple of months you're going to have an R40 that's going to be asking for all your spare time so it can be broken in. Do you want to spend that time wrenching or driving. Also you may have no desire to drive a Porsche with a factory engine after driving your 996 with the R40. Sometimes my wife has to remind me, "do you want to work on another car, or drive your Porsche?"

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17136501

Bingo, I like driving more than wrenching, but I hate to pass on a good opportunity...They are rare here in the middle of the Pacific ocean. Bottom line is, it has to wait until I recover (financially) a bit more. My wife wants something sporty but it needs to be an auto

POST 33Original post

Quotes source post: 17138107

I dunno man, sound like a no-brainer to me...Lots of offers financially and labor. Someone offering to buy the car, others offering to fly down and spend some time "surfing and wrenching" as a vacation..Sounds like a "996 Community Party" to me. I don't like to fly or surf, but if it were close to me I would buy it , may not be a Catastrophic failure? I'll offer my expertise and moral support.

POST 34 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The car was traded for an MB that never had it's title signed previously. On the 26th the guy will know if he can get it legally transferred. Stay tuned!
